Ken Hargreaves

Ken Hargreaves is the assistant vice president for strategy implementation and external relations officer. In that capacity, he supports the planning and execution of institute strategic initiatives and manages external advocacy priorities for the Institute, both campus and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Mr. Hargreaves joined Caltech in 2008 as the Institute's senior director for design and Construction. In that role he was responsible for campus master planning and the capital construction program.
Prior to joining Caltech, Mr. Hargreaves was the Director of Operations for New Construction with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) where he helped manage the $12 billion bond program which ultimately constructed over 100 new K-12 schools.
Mr. Hargreaves' professional career began as an enlisted member of the U.S. Navy. The hallmark of his enlisted career was being a propulsion plant operator on the USS Drum (SSN 677), a fast attack submarine. While on the USS Drum, Hargreaves received an ROTC scholarship to attend college and earn a commission as an officer. After completing a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Mr. Hargreaves was commissioned as an officer in the Naval Civil Engineer Corps. In that capacity he managed facilities, maintenance, construction, design, procurement, and real estate associated with Navy and Marine Corps bases worldwide. He continued that work for the remainder of his naval career and left the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service.
